Dover Food Pantry struck by car, 79-year-old driver injured

The Dover Food Pantry and Find It At The First Thrift Shop on the corner of Silver Street and Central Avenue sustained serious damage Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2022, when a car drove into the front of the building.

DOVER — Jennifer Spargo, director of the dover-food-pantry.html” data-t-l=”:b|e|inline click|$u” class=”gnt_ar_b_a”>Dover Food Pantry, had just opened the doors to the dozen patrons waiting outside just 10 minutes earlier. She was in the back of the store in mid-conversation when she heard a loud crash and glass shattering.

“It all happened in slow motion,” Spargo said. “I thought the building was collapsing. I couldn’t see the car behind the racks of clothes. I just saw the window and ceiling fall.”

The building on the corner of Silver Street and Central Avenue sustained serious damage Tuesday, after a 2006 Hyundai sedan, operated by a 79-year-old man, drove into the front of the building, according to police. Nearly the entire car entered the shop.

There were at least 10 people in the store at the time, but no one inside was injured, according to police. The driver was transported to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Spargo said she didn’t realize the crashing noise was a car until she heard someone shout to check on the driver.
