Simple like JLo to custom like Alia: Wedding rings in vogue this season

When Jennifer Lopez recently flaunted her wedding ring – a simple white band – which was completely in contrast to the dazzling, extravagant rings the star has sported in the past, many would-be brides (and grooms too!) would have taken notes. When it comes to choosing wedding (or engagement) rings, social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest serve as guides, say jewellers. They add that a lot of research now goes into deciding wedding or engagement rings. Ishu Datwani, director and founder of a jewellery brand, says, “Along with pictures or references of the wedding rings worn by celebrities, young couples pick up ideas from Pinterest and Instagram. We have a lot of customers who have done their research and are well aware of what they want. These are surely the most used mediums for designs and research for wedding rings.”

Customised rings like Alia’s, with initials or symbols, are in vogue, say jewellers

‘There’s a dramatic increase in demand for custom-made jewellery’

Alia Bhatt’s customised wedding ring featured a hexagonal diamond on top of a band that had eight encrusted diamonds, symbolising Ranbir Kapoor’s lucky number. Many couples are now opting for something similarly personalised. Says Aanchal Goel, founder of a diamond jewellery brand, “We are seeing a demand for unique rings that reflect the couple’s individual style and their unique personality. We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the demand for custom-made jewellery. Clients are no longer content with mass-produced items, they want something specifically designed for them like infinity and stackable rings, which have a solitaire, or matching wedding bands, that offer a sense of unity and symmetry.” Adds Ambar Pariddi Sahai, jewellery designer and owner of a jewellery brand, “Modern brides prefer ordering simple yet statement rings. Also, couples go for matching bands with a message, their initials or a symbol engraved on the band.”

‘Diamonds are still popular, many modern brides are opting for alternative stones such as sapphires, emeralds and rubies’

While diamond solitaires continue to be popular among would-be brides, some also go in for – sapphire, emeralds and rubies. “Gemstones like sapphires, rubies and emeralds are being accepted well in wedding rings. Jewellery trend forecasts also suggest that these gemstones will be trending in wedding rings. Katrina Kaif’s blue sapphire diamond ring is already popular among brides,” informs Ambar. “Big stones and sculptural designs are gaining popularity along with classic pear and oval cuts. Modern brides are specifically looking for double stones, which visually showcase the confluence of two people. We’re seeing people choose unique diamonds and gemstones,” adds Bharti Bangur, owner of a jewellery brand. Even heritage pieces and heirlooms are making a comeback in wedding rings. Says Ritu Bajoria, owner of another jewellery brand, “Since diamond rings are very common, brides are coming to us looking for heavy, heritage pieces like rings in polki or jadau. We see a lot of couples coming to us with their heirloom pieces. They want the piece redesigned and modified into something modern.

‘From Beyonce to JLo and Kareena to Katrina, brides look at celeb styles for wedding ring inspiration’

Be it Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Deepika Padukone or Katrina Kaif, their wedding rings have definitely inspired many brides, and jewellers say that brides also closely follow the rings sported by international celebs like Beyonce and JLo. “Over the years, we have seen several celebrities choose unique and eye-catching engagement rings. From Beyonce’s enormous diamond solitaire to Jennifer Lopez’s square-cut emerald ring, there are endless ways to make a statement with your wedding ring. And it seems couples are taking inspiration from their favourite celebrities when choosing their own rings. We have seen an increase in the number of clients requesting statement rings that are worn by celebrities at events. Whether they are looking for a ring with a large centre stone or a more unusual cut, it’s clear that celebrities are having a big impact on the world of wedding jewellery,” says Aanchal Goel.
